CRITERIA AND SUBMISSION INFORMATION

The following information provides all you need to prepare and present your submission in the British Travel Press Awards 2011.

GENERAL INFORMATION

• Work’ is an Article, Feature, Blog, Photograph, Broadcast, Publication, Travel Book, Website or Green Initiative in any category that you wish to enter below
  • Individual pieces of Work may not be entered in more than one category
  • Work submitted must have been published in the UK in print or online or if broadcast aired on television, radio or online during the year 1 July 2010 to 30 June 2011
  • Work submitted must show the date and name of the medium in which it was published
• A travel Article is defined as a piece of writing about travel products, topics or destinations that is published in a publication, newspaper or magazine or online
• A travel Feature is defined as a piece of writing or broadcasting that concentrates on a particular travel related subject or destination
• A travel Blogger is defined as a writer who has at least one year of regular travel blogging

• The Closing Date for submissions of Work is 23 September 2011
• The decision of the judges is final.  No correspondence will be entered into

Award 1 Travel Trade Writer of the Year   Nominees in this category will be professional travel trade writers or journalists   Nominees should submit by email 3 individual examples of their Work that has been published in print or online during 1 July 2010 - 30 June 2011   Online submissions may include online web and podcast writing   Judges will be looking for a trade writer/journalist with the ability to access exclusive angles to get behind the stories and demonstrate creativity and originality   Award 2 Consumer Travel Writer of the Year   This award is open to professional consumer travel writers or journalists   Nominees should submit by email 3 individual examples of their Work published in print or online during 1 July 2010 - 30 June 2011   Online submissions may include web and podcast writing   Judges will be looking for a travel writer/journalist that has written well-researched articles that are creative, original and appealing to the consumer   Award 3 Broadcast Travel Writer of the Year    This award is open to professional travel broadcasters on television or radio or online Nominees should submit by email 3 individual examples of their Work broadcast in the UK during   1 July 2010 - 30 June 2011 on television or radio or online Judges will be looking for a creative and dynamic journalist, who shows flair and authority in the programmes he or she produces Award 4 Travel Blogger of the Year This award is open to Travel Bloggers who have at least one year of regular travel blogging (during the year 1 July 2010 to 30 June 2011)   Nominees should submit 3 individual examples of their UK Blogs posted during the period stated above   Nominees must provide details of  Blog address  Blog stats and audience profiles  Additional reach and engagement via social media platforms such as Twitter   Judges will be looking for a travel blogger that demonstrates thought-provoking and entertaining writing which provides insight as well as humour and engagement     Award 5 Young Travel Writer of the Year Nominees must be 30 years or younger on 30 June 2011 – please advise your date of birth Nominees should submit 3 pieces Work published in print or online during 1 July 2010 - 30 June 2011 Judges will be looking for a talented young writer/journalist who has written lively articles and demonstrates creativity, originality and the ability to get behind the stories Award 6 Travel Photographer of the Year Travel photographs will be accepted from both dedicated travel photographers and travel writers/journalists who also take photographs Nominees should submit a maximum of 5 photos published in print or online in the UK during 1 July 2010 - 30 June 2011 Photographs should be a single image in colour or black & white Don’t forget to let us know when and where the photographs were published Judges will be looking for compelling images showing flair and originality   Award 7 Outstanding Contribution Awards Nominees for an Outstanding Contribution Award will be contacted directly by the organisers Self-nominations do not apply in this category Award 8 Travel Trade Publication of the Year This award is open to all Trade Publications published in print in the UK on a regular basis or one-off publications or supplements Nominees in Print must submit 3 individual examples of their Publication published on different dates during 1 July 2010 - 30 June 2011 Nominess to send 6 copies of each of those individual examples to Kingley so that we can forward them on to the judges Judges will be looking for trade publications with great visual impact and excellent photography, are easy to read providing readers with informative and well-written relevant content   Award 9 Consumer Travel Publication of the Year This award is open to all Consumer Travel Publications that are magazines dedicated to travel published in print in the UK on a regular basis Nominees in Print must submit 3 individual examples of their Publication published in the UK on different dates during 1 July 2010 - 30 June 2011 Judges will be looking for publications that are visually exciting with well-written and engaging, colourful content and excellent photography Nominees should send 6 copies of each of those individual examples to Kingley so that we can forward them on to the judges   Award 10 National/Regional Newspaper Travel Section of the Year This Award is for UK National or Regional newspapers that have regular printed travel sections that are part of newspapers published on a regular basis Nominees must submit 3 individual examples of their publications travel sections published on different dates during the year 1 July 2010 - 30 June 2011 Judges will be looking for travel sections that demonstrate outstanding content, design, presentation, readability and photography Nominees should send 6 copies of each of those individual examples to Kingley so that we can forward them on to the judges   Award 11 Consumer Magazine Travel Section of the Year This Award is for UK Consumer Magazines that are not dedicated travel magazines but have regular printed travel sections that form part of the magazine and published on a regular basis Nominees must submit 3 individual examples of their publications travel sections published on different dates during the year 1 July 2010 - 30 June 2011 Judges will be looking for travel sections that demonstrate oustanding content, design, presentation, readability and photography Nominees should send 6 copies of each of those individual examples to Kingley so that we can forward them on to the judges Award 12 Online Travel Trade Publication of the Year  This award is open to Online Travel Publications for the Trade that are published on a   regular basis   Online publications should send the URL and 3 chosen dates as examples of their publication published during 1 July 2010 to 30 June 2011   Work must clearly show the date of the publication   Judges will be looking for online publications with articles that are easy to find, well presented, informative and have compelling content or practical insights into travel products, issues or destinations Award 13 Online Consumer Travel Publication of the Year This award is open to Online Travel Publications for the Consumer that are published on a regular basis   Online publications should send the URL and 3 chosen dates as examples of their publication published during 1 July 2010 to 30 June 2011   Work must clearly show the date of the publication   Judges will be looking for online publications with articles that are easy to find, well presented, informative and have compelling content or practical insights into travel products, issues or destinations Award 14 Travel Trade Feature of the Year   This award is open to all travel trade writers/journalists The Features submitted must have been been written by a single author and published in print or online during 1 July 2010 to 30 June 2011 Nominees must submit by email a dated copy of the nominated print Feature showing the name of the publication Nominees must submit by email a dated copy of the nominated feature showing the Online Publication name or the URL to access the feature Judges will be looking for trade features that are engaging, colourful, informative, well-crafted, easy to read and make compelling reading Award 15 Consumer Travel Feature of the Year   Features submitted must have been written by a single author and published in print or online during 1 July 2010 to 30 June 2011 Nominees must submit by email a dated copy of the nominated print Feature showing the name of the publication Online Features nominees must submit  by email a dated copy of the nominated feature showing the Online Publication name or the URL to access the feature Judges will be looking for consumer travel features that are engaging, colourful, informative, well-crafted, easy to read and make compelling reading   Award 16 Travel Broadcast Programme of the Year - TV, Radio & Online   The Programme nominated will be a Television, Radio or Online programme broadcast  in the UK during 1 July 2010 to 30 June 2011 Submissions may include a one-off programme or a series of programmes including features, documentaries, interviews or phone-ins Nominees should submit by email the URL of the nominated programme, or if a series, a programme from within the series which in their view represents the series as a whole If the programme has to be provided to the organisers in disc format we will require 6 recorded copies on a CD formatted for viewing on a pc of the nominated programmes so that we can forward them on to the judges     Award 17 Travel Guide Book of the Year   Nominees should confirm that the nominated Guide Book is either a first edition or a major revision published in the UK during 1 July 2010 - 30 June 2011 Please forward 6 copies of the nominated books to us so that we can forward them on to the judges Judges will be looking for travel guide books that demonstrate good research, provide essential, easy to read insights to destinations and provide the reader with clear, directions (easy to use maps if included) of places not to be missed   Award 18 Travel Narrative Book of the Year - (Fiction or Non-Fiction) Nominees should confirm that the Narrative Book (Fiction or Non-Fiction) is a first edition published in the UK during 1 July 2010 - 30 June 2011   Judges will be looking for outstanding travel writing with rich or funny accounts that excite, inspire or amuse the reader   Please forward 6 copies of the nominated books to Kingley so that we may supply them to the judges  Award 19 The Travel Journalists' Award for the Best UK Travel Website of the Year The Award will be made to the Best UK Travel Website in the travel, aviation and hospitality industries. The site may be transactional or information-only and must have been operational in the UK during 1 July 2010 to 30 June 2011   The Travel Website nominated should incorporate the best of all or some of the elements listed:  User friendliness Design of the visual elements Use of leading edge technologies Quality, clarity and usefulness of content Comprehensive search process Booking or dynamic packaging process if a transactional site Customer service   Those nominated should provide the URL of the website plus any information on the purpose of the site that they think will add value Award 20 The Travel Editors' Green Award of the Year   This Award will be made to an individual, a business, a cause or a campaign that clearly has embraced green and responsible tourism during 1 July 2010 to 30 June 2011 Nominees in this category should submit specific examples (no more than 800 words) of how an individual, a business or a campaign has made a difference to both the environmental and social impact of tourism and is using influence to encourage sustainable practices in other areas (e.g. suppliers and/or industry) and has successfully:  Implemented within their organisations more efficient ways to use water, energy and other resources and reduced waste OR Reduced the environmental impact of tourism by their organisation OR Introduced effective initiatives or campaigns that promote environmental sustainability Nominees must show clear details of measurable achievements

HOW TO PREPARE A SUBMISSION

• Remember you must provide comprehensive contact details for yourself
• If you are submitting Work in the Young Travel Writer award category please remember to add your date of birth to your submission
• Nominees submitting Work published in PRINT and/or ONLINE should send by email a link to the relevant Work showing the date and publication when the Work was published
• Nominees submitting Work published in any BROADCAST medium should email the programme material with the URL address.   Accompanying emails should clearly state the medium and channel in which the broadcast was made together with the date of the broadcast
• Nominees submitting PHOTOGRAPHS should send:
  • All Photographs must be emailed as Jpegs (.jpg) of no more than 4Mb and accompanied by a PDF or screen shot of the printed page on which the photo was originally published showing the Publication name and date
    

HOW TO SUBMIT WORK
Work samples should be emailed but if any Work samples have to be mailed they will not be returned unless an appropriately sized self-addressed, stamped mailer is provided. Kingley will not be responsible for any damaged or lost Works.

JUDGING
A shortlist of the nominated finalists and examples of their Work will be presented to an independent panel that will judge and select, against defined criteria, the finalists and the winning entry in each category.  The decision of the judges is final.  No correspondence will be entered into.

Finalists in all Awards’ Categories will be notified by 14 October and invited as guests to the Awards Ceremony on 28 November. Details of the finalists will be announced on 17 October 2011 on www.e-tid.com and www.kingley.co.uk.
